A warm, hopeful editorial photograph for a Christian encouragement blog post about finding God's goodness and renewing the mind during difficult times. A closed or subtly visible Bible resting on a simple wooden table near a window, with dramatic storm clouds outside giving way to golden sunlight and gentle rays, conveying hope, peace, faith, and renewed perspective. Natural, realistic, tasteful, uplifting, uncluttered composition with open space suitable for a featured image. No text, no words, no logos, no watermark.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

It’s hard to find the goodness of God in today’s world…or so the enemy wants you to think it is.

Trust me, I get it.

You’re tired of struggling financially, physically, mentally, or all three. Maybe you’re tired of not seeing with your own eyes God answer that prayer you prayed over and over and over. Maybe you’re tired because everywhere you look you see evil.

I get it. Everyday we are inundated with evil through the news and even just a run to the store. Our world seems like one great big dumpster fire… and yet if you look, truly look, you will find the goodness of God.

I’ve followed neuroscience a lot more lately and here is what I found. Science is catching up to the Bible. Neuroscience has now shown that due to the neuroplasticity of your brain, when you focus on the good in life, your brain will rewire itself to find even more good. You will start looking for the good.

Sound familiar?

“…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

God knew that this would be a struggle in this fallen world, so as with other things, He wrote a road map and told us what to do.

Your mind remembers what has been true or seemed true in the past. If you’ve endured trauma or had repeated negative experiences, your mind goes there first. It’s no secret I’ve dealt with significant trauma, both in childhood and as an adult. The most recent health struggles have also had me bracing for impact at every turn. The almost nine months of insomnia I’ve been dealing with and struggle to sleep, leave me with anxiety every time I lay down at night. I begin to wonder if yet again I’ll be awake all night long. That leads my body to brace for impact and already get set in the negative.

This is all there is. Life will never get better. God doesn’t want good things for me like He does for (fill in the blank). And on and on and on.

That’s just one example, but here’s what I’ve learned. I can’t change overnight what my body is physically dealing with. There are physiological reasons related to trauma, genes, nutrient deficiencies, and hormones that are working against me and take time to heal… but I can control my thought process at that moment. I don’t do it perfectly either. I have my times of why God and I lament and I grieve the unfairness and the struggle of my life. Then I do my best to come back to His promises. Focusing on His promises and all He has done, my Ebenezers, helps me have hope.

My mind changes and I feel my cup being filled with His goodness.

God’s word is filled with promises, and when we choose to focus on the truth we thwart the enemy’s schemes and I am all about doing that! Can I get an AMEN?!

Join me as we begin to rewire our brains and trust more fully and deeply the God of all things. Together lets find the goodness of God when life is tearing us down.

Challenge

  • List one negative thought or belief you have right now.
  • Cover it with TRUTH:
    • Psalm 23:6 “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
    • Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
  • Find and list one thing that shows God’s goodness today or this week.
  • Prayer

Father God,
I ask You to replace the thought belief of ________ with your truth. You promise goodness and mercy all the days of my life and to work ALL things together for the good of me and for Your glory. I trust this today and thank you for ___________ (list what you wrote about God’s goodness).
In Jesus’ Mighty Name,
Amen

Note: I’ll do my best to get on here more and write, but it does depend on my health and my sleep, so I covet your continued prayers for healing and I’ll be back as often as I can.

My favorite books/podcasts lately on rewiring your brain for good with God.
