If we met face to face and I asked you, “Who are you?”  “Who is (fill in the blank)?

What would you say?

You might say:

I am a teacher.

I am a mom or dad.

I am a sister or brother.

I am an aunt or uncle.

I am a Missourian or whatever state you live in.

I am a coach.

I am a doctor.

I am a nurse.

I am a chef.

For me, right now I could say I’m an almost 50-year-old woman (how did that happen?), a dyslexia practitioner, a business owner… I could go on.

I am… You fill in the blank.

What would you say?

I know my responses over the years. I’m a daughter, sister, teacher… Then when everything was stripped away from me, I didn’t know who I was and it morphed into I am broken, unfixable, unloved…all the lies the enemy wanted me to believe and what the world might say about me.

But in the past few years I realized one true identity that I hold.

I am a child of God. That’s it. If you know Jesus as your Savior then that is your true identity that will never change. You may still be those other things like mom, sister, brother, teacher, nurse… but the only identity that lasts for all eternity and that matters, is you are a child of God.

I want to note here that the world will tell you everyone is a child of God but that’s a lie. We are born of Adam into sin, and must be reborn or born again into God’s family by choosing to follow Jesus. When you choose to follow Jesus and confess with your mouth He is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead… only then are you a child of God.

You have all the benefits then of knowing God.

You are chosen, blessed, adopted, forgiven of past present and future sins, without blame, given grace, accepted without blame, redeemed, justified, not condemned, set free from the law of sin that leads to death, a new creation, one in Christ with other believers, holy and blameless, under Christ’s authority, will sit with Christ in glory as a joint heir, can come into God’s presence with confidence and freedom, made complete in Christ, sealed with the Holy Spirit who is the guarantee of your inheritance and have eternal glory, loved beyond measure by a merciful God and will be raised up and sit with Him in heaven.*

The next time someone asks, this is your answer…I am a child of God.

Don’t ever forget it and you will live a freedom you’ve never known before.

Go live loved and as a child of God today my friends.

There is a Christian movie that portrays all of this very well and it’s actually free to watch on YouTube so I’m going to link it below as well as the song, “I am who you say I am.”

* Bible references for who you are in Christ come from Ephesians, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians Colossians, 2 Timothy
