Where Are Your Thoughts Leading You? Part 2

Taking our thoughts captive.

Continuing from last week…

Do you ever think any of the following?

  • I am not good enough.
  • I will not be missed.
  • No one cares about me.
  • I am not as “good” or “pretty” or “handsome” or _______ as her/him?
  • God cannot use me.
  • My life is horrible.
  • My life is a tragedy.
  • My life is not worth anything.

I could go on with the negative thoughts we have running in our minds. Those thoughts are not of God and usually are from the evil in this world which would be Satan.

It took me years to realize that these negative thoughts added to my depression and actually kept me from doing what God had for me. He doesn’t want these running around in my head or yours. I learned from my counselor to picture the thoughts in my head like a stage and watch what and how long I put the spotlight on the negative.

We will all have negative thoughts because we are human and that is part of this sinful world. However, how long you keep that spotlight on the thoughts makes a huge difference in your attitude, feelings, and how God can work in your life.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

What happens when we take our thoughts – good, bad, and ugly, captive and make them obedient to Christ?

We begin to do what Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

We begin to think on things that God would have us to think on instead of the negative reels that Satan likes to put into our heads.

How do we do this besides just trusting God to helps us? Well, consider what are you putting into your mind. What are you watching on TV? What are you reading in the news and in social media? Who do you follow on social media? When you consider these things ask: how is it helping me become more like Christ and the person God wants me to be as I represent Him?

As you begin your days, I encourage you to ask God for help with this. He will be faithful to guide you and when these negative and not Christ worthy thoughts enter, He can take them from you and help you begin to see what He wants in your mind.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
