God and Sexual Assault

God is My Refuge

Our fortress.

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” Psalm 91:1-2

As I read my devotional today I was invited to remember God is my refuge. Our refuge. We can come to Him for rest when we are weary. The psalm I quoted above is written by an anonymous writer in the Bible. He speaks of God as not only our refuge, but our fortress.

As I thought about this and our journey in recovery, how long and difficult it is, and how low on strength we can be. It was like balm to my soul. God is our refuge. A refuge is a shelter, a safe haven. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? A safe haven. Safe is a word we don’t often equate with our lives do we? Safe haven. Yes, that is comforting.

He is my fortress. A fortress is not susceptible to outside influence or disturbance. Again, a safe place. Safe. There’s that word again. God is safe. One of the many things sexual assault leaves us feeling is unsafe. Yet, here is the One who is safe. Always. God is safe. He is our refuge, our fortress. Always and forever.

I imagine it to be similar to the picture I found of the puppy, resting safe in Our Father’s arms.God is my refuge

It does not mean nothing bad will ever happen. It does mean He is always with us and that He is safe. God Himself will never harm us. He will always love us. He is trustworthy. He is the ultimate One we can count on to be our guide in this life. No person on this earth can claim what God does.

So, today, I am holding on to what the anonymous writer in Psalms spoke about today. God is our refuge and fortress. Our safe haven and shelter where we can rest as we continue to travel on this journey in recovery. I claim that today. Claim it with me.

God,

Thank you that you are the One safe place. Help me continue to learn to trust You and love You. To understand Your love and grace. Today I claim what You say You are to me. A refuge and fortress. Thank you for being my safe place.

Amen
