For some of you Father’s Day may be a hard day and I want you to know I get it. It’s hard for me too and has been for well over a decade. Maybe you lost your good earthly father, maybe your earthly father wasn’t a good father, or maybe you are estranged. I want you to know I have prayed for you that you may experience the comfort and peace of the One True Father and know Him. This week, I am celebrating Him, and I invite you to do the same.
I used to think everyone was a child of God. I was wrong. You see, we are born to humans – a man and a woman – and we are their earthly children. They are the ones God has placed as our earthly father and mother. However, we must be born again to be a child of the One True God – and Father
What does that look like?
Amazingly it is quite simple. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10
It all comes down to realizing you are a sinner who needs to be saved. Saved by grace. Not one of us has lived a perfect life, nor will we continue. That’s why the grace and mercy of Jesus dying for my sins and your sins is incredibly amazing.
It is when we do this, that we become children of God.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12-13
I am thankful today that I have a true Father in God and that He was patient with me when I couldn’t see Him for who He truly is. That He loves me more than any person on this earth, and because He loved me (and you!) so much, He sent His one and only son to die for our sins. How many fathers would do that? Sacrifice their son for you?
If this seems confusing or you think it’s too good to be true – rest assured, it is not – and it’s okay! Ask God to open your heart and mind, and He will.
Because believe me when I say I get father wounds. There were years where I did not want people to tell me to see God as a father. I had a hard time seeing God as loving and not someone I had to perform for.
Recently, after a few years of thinking I had worked through my God as my Father issues related to my trauma, I discovered I was still waiting for the next shoe to drop. I watched a documentary called, He Calls Me Daughter, and I realized that I live many days waiting for God to bring down the hammer, or cause something to fall apart.
I had no idea, until the Holy Spirit awakend my soul, that I still harbored that aspect of a father wound. I have been processing and working through that with God. Claiming scripture that is truth to combat the lies.
The lie that God doesn’t want my good.
The lie that I have to earn His love.
The lie that I have let Him down (which we all have!) and so He doesn’t want good things for me.
What lies are you believing about God? Do you see Him as your loving Father or is there a block there?
I encourage you to do two things.
Pray and ask God to open your heart and mind to see Him for who He is and illuminate any lies you have made agreements with regarding Him as a loving Father.
Watch this documentary – I promise it’s not boring – it is amazingly done and well worth the time and if you need to buy it – money to watch. There are numerous places to watch it.
Last, worship to this song this week and if you can’t, ask God to help you see why and I promise He’ll help you.
Happy Father’s Day God! I’m thankful for ALL you’ve done and WILL do!
