Do you remember talking about renewable resources in science? Honestly, science was hard for me, but I do kind of remember discussing this.

“A renewable resource is a resource that can be replenished naturally over time. As a result, it is sustainable despite its consumption by humankind.” (ref: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/r/renewable_resource.asp)

Did you ever think about the fact that, emotions are a renewable resource?

My counselor said this in a session recently and he said he heard it from another counselor one time.

It’s accurate.

Think about it.

Life is basically like a psalm – up and down and back again – emotions are a renewable resource. Have you ever read the Psalms? One minute David is praising God, and the next he is crying out in anguish. Then, he is praising God again, and then his soul is downcast….and it continues on like this! I mean, just in Psalm 21 David is praising God with joy and then in Psalm 22 he is asking why God forsakes him.

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent.” Psalm 22:!-2

It is OK to grieve. David walks us through mini psalms and prayers of his cries of his heart. He cries out to God asking “why?” as he processed through his anger and his grief.

But here is where he ends after releasing his emotions. He ends, asking God to be his strength and not be far from him. To deliver him and in the midst of everything, he will praise God.

“But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me!” Psalm 22:19

I get yelling at God. I get crying out to God, and thinking things might not ever change. I get (and gals we probably do a bit more than guys) the happy one minute and in tears or anger the next. We cycle through emotions and one thing we can count on while we’re still on earth is the cycle will continue. If you’re happy, you will be sad again at some point.

Let me encourage you. How you feel when you’re down won’t last forever. If you know Jesus, you have the ultimate hope that this world is not our home. And one day, the days on earth which seem to last forever, will be but a drop in the bucket in comparison to eternity.

And…the cool thing is God is the same yesterday, today, and forever even when you’re emotions are all over the place!

Let’s pray today.

Father God,
I do cry out to you. Like David said, you are my strength and You have brought me this far and aren’t going to leave me now. You will deliver those who delight in You, and I ask You be with me and provide me the strength. May I praise You and allow others to see You and not me, and may I always trust in You. Thank you for Your grace, Your mercy, and Your love.
