Recently I was meeting with a group of women at the library. Everyone was talking while we were working on our crafts. The conversation was what it is often about. Their husbands, children, and grandchildren. Nieces or nephews. I just sat there and said nothing as everyone talked.
What exactly could I say? I cannot relate at all to anything they are saying. I will never have children or grandchildren and I’ve never been married. I’ve been denied the chance to ever know my nephew. For me to even say, “You know it’s hard for me to relate to what you’re saying because I will never have any of these experiences.” Just letting them know where I’m coming from would most likely leave them staring at me. It’s a lonely feeling.
Much like we feel when we are around others who have not experienced the trauma of sexual assault. People can be talking about things we did not get to experience or in conversation it may come up for us to share what we have been through. That is usually when the silence comes. The stares. The “Well, I need to go now.” Or other excuses to get away. Sometimes we just don’t have anything to add because it so drastically changed our lives we cannot relate.
We feel overlooked, unwanted, and rejected. It is a lonely place to be.
Yet, God does not overlook us. All we have to do is look at David in the Bible to see that God does not overlook what others do. David was overlooked by his father and the leaders because they did not think a man who was not the best looking, did not have the best job and qualifications could be the king. Oh, how they were wrong.
David is exactly the man God was looking for to be king. While David was a shepherd God was preparing him to be the king one day. He was not overlooked by God. No he was chosen specifically for God’s purpose.
Just as we are. During this time in our lives God is also preparing us for a purpose. Who knows what it could be. We may feel overlooked and like we don’t fit in anywhere because no one can relate to our experiences, but God hasn’t forgotten about us. No He wants to use us.
So let’s remember today that even when we don’t fit into the world’s mold or what other people are doing that God hasn’t overlooked us. We are a perfect fit into His plan. We just have to keep trusting Him and holding onto Him as we walk through this journey. Remembering as lonely as it can feel we are never alone because God is with us.
Thank you God for always being with me. Remind me You are near. That You have not overlooked me, but have great plans for me to show others Your glory through what has happened in my life.
