Today as I was rereading my devotional a song from my childhood entered my head. If you grew up in church you probably know it. It is commonly taught to children to teach them about Jesus and His love for them. However, that is not what stood out when the song came to my mind today. It was about His strength and my weakness.
The song is “Jesus Loves Me”:
“Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.”
I am not sure where it originated from. I looked for a copyright and didn’t find one, but found several versions of the song. I chose to stick with this first verse and version I knew.
As I began to think about it much can be learned from one little song. God can teach us so many lessons about Him through it.
Jesus loves us – How do we know? The Bible tells us so. Not because the preacher says so. Not because anyone tells us. Because God’s word, the Bible says He loves us. Better yet, it tells us how much He loves us by describing Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for every single one of us.
They are weak, but He is strong. Refers to the little ones, but also to us. Just because we grow into adults does not mean we grow out of the need for God. We may grow stronger physically but we still desperately need God’s strength to make it through.
This is what came to my mind today when I was reading. I am weak. The world would like to tell me I have the power to get better on my own. Except I can’t. I haven’t been able to. I need God and His strength because mine is depleted. And honestly I don’t want to be powerful enough to do it on my own. Plus, how lonely would that be? I want to need God. To be with Him and need Him. Yes, I am weak, but His is strong.
Yes Jesus loves me. Can you hear the little voices singing it? That love does not end with children. It extends all throughout our life. Jesus loves you. The Bible tells us so.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
It doesn’t mean I understand God’s love yet. Maybe you don’t either. It is complicated with our history.
So today how about we call on God’s strength to continue to get us through this journey. Day by day. Step by step. Thanking Him for His love and asking Him to continue to help us understand it.
Maybe sing yourself to sleep tonight.
“Jesus loves me, this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.”
