God and Sexual Assault

God Loves Us Through Loving One Another

"God told me to tell you He loves you..."

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 (NIV)

I had spent the last few weeks wondering again why He had let me go through the pain of being sexually assaulted. Wondering if I was beautiful. Wondering if there were any people out there who would love me.

Then I met her. My 81 year old angel. She came up to me one Sunday morning out of the blue and flipped my hair back behind my shoulders and said, “You’re beautiful. Did you know that? God loves you.” I stood there, I think with my mouth hanging open, thinking to myself “Who is this and is she sane?”

She proceeded to say “God told me to come tell you He loves you and I love you too. He’s given me this love to share with you.”

I continued to stare. Finally, I mumbled a “Thank you”.

Over the next Sundays this 81 year old angel would shower me with her love, remind me of God’s love for me and give me simple gifts from the heart.

“I don’t know what you’re going through,” she said. “And I don’t need to. God knows. He just sent me to love you.”

I cannot fathom how someone can love someone they don’t even know. I don’t understand it. When you’re sexually assaulted you lose the ability to judge who really loves you. What is love? How is it really shown?

Thanks to a lesson from my 81 year old angel God reminded me He can send others to love us.

Imagine, the God who created everything loves you enough to send people to love on you. Look around you, they could be anywhere. A friendly face or a simple smile from someone at the supermarket, Wal-Mart, or at work. Someone who genuinely cares when they ask “How are you today?”

Be open to what He sends you.

It is quite amazing when you think about it. Take a moment and receive it.

Father God,

Thank you for continuing to find ways to show me how much You love me. Help me be able to accept Your love You send through Your people.

Amen

Have you had an experience where someone has showed you love? Where is a place where you can watch for God to show you love through others?
